Daffodil Hill

Sounds of laughter fill the winter air as families enjoy sledding on the old ski slope behind the clubhouse. A nearby warming shed provides seating as well as hot cocoa and coffee for viewers as well as the many sledders. When spring returns a truly unforgettable sight emerges from the once snowy hill.  A wide river of bright yellow daffodils cascades down the  the top of the slope . It takes our breath away!

As the seasons change so, too, does the color of the river. Fields of blue lupines now flow, followed by black-eyed Susans, Queen Anne's Lace and other Maine wildflowers.

Fall brings shades of purple from asters and bright goldenrod- feasts for the eyes, as well as food for the migrating monarch butterflies, birds, bees and other nearby wildlife.

This is truly an all-seasons garden to be enjoyed by all our visitors-be they winged or footed!

Local elementary school children and/or community members might be involved in raising funds to buy the daffodils. Science, math, and art classes could help in the design of the' river of daffodils" and /or the fall planting of the bulbs.... lots of opportunities for hands-on learning, counting, measurement, art and much more. There could be a celebration each year  -with poetry reading and writing, a Maypole, a hike to the top of the slope, a picnic, etc.

The ideas are endless.... when spring returns and the river of daffodils flows!
